The Saskatoon Whitewater Kayak Club has just returned from Canadian Whitewater Nationals and the Pan American Slalom Championships!!! The week was fantastic as athletes from all over Canada as well as Brazil, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Australia, and the US showed up to race at this top level event.
As for Saskatchewan, Sara and Ben Lapointe and Taiya Jablonski represented us as athletes while Ron and Cindy Lapointe represented us as volunteers and Brendan Curson represented us as our coach and also did some volunteer work.
The racing started out with the National Down River Sprint and Down River Classic races. Only Ben took part in the DR Sprint in the cadet boys category. On Friday all three of our athletes competed in the Canadian Nationals Novice Slalom Race with all three hitting the podium in multiple classes including K1, C1, and C2.
On Saturday Ben participated in the National Slalom Championships in the hotly contested cadet boys catagory. The race went well and Ben had a blast weaving his way down to a fourth place finish, just missing the podium.
The exciting part to the week for Saskatchewan happened Sunday night at the Nationals banquet and award ceremony. Our team was happily enjoying our dinner when it was announced during the National DR Sprint medal presentation that Ben Lapointe was the winner of the Bronze Medalin the cadet boys category and that because of this medal, Saskatchewan had claimed it’s very first points for the overall Provincial trophy!!!! The crowd erupted with cheers for Ben’s and Saskatchewan’s success!!!
We would like to thank our 2009 sponsors and partners for aiding in our success this year. SGI Canada was instrumental in helping provide funds to purchase slalom kayaks so we could race at this major event. Also, the Kelsey Kayak Club in Saskatoon was tremendous to us in allowing us to use their equipment all year to run our youth lessons at Harry Bailey pool. Thank you, and we look forward to future success.
Many thanks go out to our parents and paddlers and we look forward to another tremendous year of paddling!!! Once again, good luck to our coach Brendan Curson as he heads off to coach the National Team at World Championships later in the summer!!
Photos and video of Nationals/Pan Ams will be online shortly.
