Now that everyone is gearing up for summer holidays to start SWKC would like to invite you to an Introduction to Kayak Slalom Night this week.
Slalom is the largest competitive whitewater kayaking sport in the world and the only whitewater kayaking sport in the Olympic Games. In Europe, slalom is the 4th highest spectator sport and with recent success on the world stage is growing quickly in Canada. It is a tremendous way to develop your kayaking skills, meet new friends, travel, and have fun on the water.
On Monday, June 15 and Wednesday, June 17, the Saskatoon Whitewater Kayak Club will be hosting Introduction to Slalom Nights at Briarwood Lake from 6:30-8:00pm. We will have slalom equipment for you to try and a sign up sheet for anyone interested in taking part in our local summer slalom program which starts Monday, June 22.
For more info on our slalom program and some exciting opportunities for the summer please refer to the SWKC program guide.
Some news to share with you regarding our program:
1) The City of Saskatoon has granted SWKC permission to set up a slalom gate course under the Circle Drive Bridge on the west side of the river near GD Archibald Park. This is great news for us because we will be able to learn and practise on a moving water slalom site as well as host a small local slalom race toward the end of the summer.
2) Some big news regarding our Head Coach and Program Director, Brendan Curson. Earlier this week Brendan was named to the coaching staff for Slalom World Championships. For three weeks from August into September he will accompany the Canadian National Team to Spain where he will have the opportunity to coach our countries top slalom racers in their bid for a World Championship.
This coaching position is great news for our program because it allows us the opportunity to gain some publicity for our local programs and athletes. This in turn will help with SaskSport and should aid us in our funding goals for the future.
3) One last note that SWKC has postponed the start of the Introductory Youth Lessons until July. For updated programs details please refer to the SWKC Program Guide.
